Course Objectives

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of maritime transport management, with a particular focus on Liner Shipping—its structure, evolution, and strategic significance. Students will explore how the dynamic landscape of liner shipping impacts port infrastructure and terminal operations, and how these interdependencies shape the global maritime network.

Key topics include the growing consolidation and concentration within the liner shipping industry, the trend toward mega-vessels, and the cascading effects of these developments on supply chain efficiency and port capacity planning.

Special emphasis is placed on Maritime and Port Logistics, including how innovations and emerging technologies are transforming operational practices. The course also critically examines the post-COVID-19 era, analyzing how the pandemic has redefined shipping structures, global logistics strategies, and the resilience of maritime transport systems.

Through case studies and up-to-date industry insights, students will gain a solid understanding of the strategic and operational challenges facing maritime transport today—and the skills to navigate them.

Course Description

The course deals with the core of the Management and Operations of Shipping with emphasis on Liner Shipping structure and tendencies and its impact on Port infrastructure and operations, including the role of concentration, vessel capacity increase and the impact on shipping network structure. Special emphasis will be given to the latest tendencies in maritime and port related logistics and the Shipping Industry post COVID 19 structure.
